We have all had a neighbor or friend give us a life hack that sounds great and convenient. Typically, it’s a DIY tip that can save you time or money. But little do you realize some of these tips are complete myths!
We at Jim’s Plumbing Now, are here to actually save you time and money by debunking some plumbing myths you may be practicing.
Common Plumbing Myths
Chemical Drain Cleaners Are Safe
If you are experiencing a clogged drain you may feel the itch to use a chemical drain cleaner to solve the issue. Although it may be a convenient temporary solution, it can cause serious damage in the long term.
Chemical drain cleaners are terrible for your drain. The chemicals within the cleaner can erode the pipes. It is best to use more traditional methods, such as snaking your drain.
It’s Alright To Shower During A Storm
You may be in a rush or you might just be eager to take a shower, but it’s not a good idea to do so during a thunderstorm. Contrary to what some believe, you still can experience an electrical shock while using your faucets at home.
Electricity may travel through your home’s pipes and come out through your faucets. This, of course, can cause an electrical shock! Our advice is to at least wait a half hour until after a storm has concluded to shower.
A Brick In The Tank Saves Money
If you are looking to save money then please do not put a brick in your toilet. Some believe that a brick will cause less water to be used in your toilet and save you money on your water bill. However, the truth is it does quite the opposite.
Bricks will erode over time while within your toilet and can prevent it from flushing.
Hot Water Clears Drain
As mentioned earlier, it is best to use more natural and traditional methods to clear out drain clogs. This means that using boiling water is no exception to this rule. Boiling water can also cause damage to your drains, similar to chemical cleaners.
Baby Wipes Are Flushable
If you are a parent of a newborn or you jumped on the trend of using baby wipes, then this myth is for you. As effective as baby wipes may be in cleaning up after yourself, they are no good in the toilet drain. Just because they are a substitute for toilet paper does not mean they should be flushed down the drain.
These wipes do not break down similarly to toilet paper and can easily cause clogs. We are not against baby wipes, but we are against flushing them down the toilet.
Importance Of Basic Plumbing Knowledge
It is essential to understand basic plumbing knowledge to avoid the costly consequences of myths. You can waste a ton of money on plumbing repairs and utility bills by trusting myths that have been debunked many times over. Also, as mentioned in regards to showering during thunderstorms, you may cause self-injury!
